How to Pack and Move Electronics Safely
Between computers, TVs, sound systems, consoles and instruments, most homes hold a serious investment in electronics. A careful packing plan keeps all of it working after the move.

Add up the laptops, monitors, televisions, speakers, gaming systems and keyboards in a typical home and the replacement cost can be substantial. These items are also some of the easiest to damage with a bad bump or a poorly padded box.
The simplest way to remove the worry is to let professionals handle it. MPs New York offers packing services with proper materials for screens and delicate components. If you are doing it yourself, the steps below will help everything arrive in working order.
How to Pack Electronics for a Move
- Step 1
Get your electronics ready
Start by locating the owner's manuals for your devices, or download them from the manufacturer's website. They often include disassembly and setup instructions you will want later. Review your coverage too: basic moving liability may not cover the full replacement value of expensive equipment, so look at moving insurance options or a temporary policy. For very valuable items, a small tracking tag can add peace of mind.
- Step 2
Prepare each device for travel
Take the batteries out of everything, including remotes and controllers, since batteries can leak or overheat in transit. Keep them together in one labeled bag. Eject any discs and tape drive trays shut. Remove ink and toner cartridges from printers to prevent spills, and lock or secure the printhead if your model allows it.
- Step 3
Label every cable
A box of tangled, unmarked cords is one of the most frustrating things to unpack. Use colored stickers or tape on each cable and its matching port so reconnecting is a quick color match. With more than a dozen devices, add written labels as well. Coil each cable with a twist tie or zip tie and pack them together in a bag or small box.
- Step 4
Prepare your computer
Back up everything before the move, ideally to a cloud service in addition to any external drive, so your data lives somewhere other than the moving truck. Moves bring more people and more open doors than an ordinary day, so check that your passwords are strong on computers and phones. For desktop towers, clear out dust with compressed air before packing.
- Step 5
Pack with plenty of padding
Line the bottom of each box with bubble wrap, towels or soft clothing. Wrap each device in soft material; screens do well with a layer of bubble wrap held in place by plastic stretch wrap, a sheet of cardboard over the face and another layer of wrap. Place the item in the box and fill every gap so nothing shifts. Avoid newspaper near screens and finishes, as it can scratch.
- Step 6
Load electronics carefully
Electronics boxes should not sit on the very top of a stack, where they can fall, or at the very bottom under heavy cartons. A secure spot in the middle of the load is best, or inside a sturdy piece of furniture such as a cabinet. On a DIY move, many people carry the most valuable devices in their own car. Loading electronics last also means they come off the truck first.
Don't Forget About Unpacking
Unpacking deserves the same care as packing. Take items out one at a time, starting with the device that has the most connections, such as your computer or TV setup.
Pull out that device's labeled cables, connect everything, confirm it works, then move on to the next one. Working this way prevents mix-ups and makes it obvious right away if something needs attention.
