Sofa disassembly is the simple fix for a frustrating problem. We take the sofa apart just enough to clear the obstacle, then rebuild it once it is inside.
Narrow stairwells, tight turns and small elevators are all common in New York, and we work around every one of them. The service covers standard sofas, sleeper sofas and daybeds.
Here is a familiar moving-day story: the couch came out of the old place fine, but the new apartment's door is just too small. Some people give up and throw the sofa away. Taken apart correctly, though, it can be rebuilt as good as before.
How We Take a Sofa Apart
Every sofa is built a little differently, but our crews generally follow these steps.
- Step 1
Remove the cushions and legs
We take off the cushions (some are attached) and unscrew the legs. If legs are bolted to the frame, we have the tools to remove them safely. Then we lift the staples holding the outer covering.
- Step 2
Expose the frame
With the fabric folded back, we reach the frame and the fasteners that hold the arms to the base, using Allen keys, screwdrivers or sockets as needed. We open as little upholstery as possible so the rebuild is quick.
- Step 3
Handle the springs safely
Sleeper sofa mechanisms can be under strong spring tension. We follow the manufacturer's guidance for your model. Please talk to us before trying this part yourself, as it can be dangerous.
- Step 4
Take apart the frame
Often removing the arms is enough to clear the doorway, stairs or elevator. If not, we separate the back from the seat by finding the bolts or screws that join them.
- Step 5
Rebuild and clean up
Inside, we reassemble the sofa in its new spot and clean up after ourselves. Your only job is to enjoy the couch.

Bought a new sofa that does not fit? Before calling us, a few things are worth trying.
Try first
- Remove the legs; many sofas have legs that unscrew by hand
- Measure the whole frame and the doorway before forcing anything
- Check the manufacturer's assembly instructions

- Treat a daybed like a bed frame and label each part
- Do not open sleeper mechanisms under tension without guidance
