Pros and Cons of Living in Manhattan Compared to Brooklyn

Crossing the East River is one of the most common moves in New York. Here is what you gain, and what you give up, when you trade Brooklyn for Manhattan.

A new job, a relationship, or simply a change of pace often sends New Yorkers from Brooklyn to Manhattan. Both boroughs have plenty to offer, but daily life feels quite different in each. Laying out the advantages and drawbacks side by side can help you decide whether the move is right for you.

List of the Pros of Living in Manhattan

Here is what tends to win people over when they make the jump across the river.

1. You get to be in the center of everything.

When people across the metro area talk about going into the city for the night, they almost always mean Manhattan. Living there puts the region's best dining, shopping, theater, and nightlife a short walk or subway ride away, so you can go out as much or as little as you like.

2. Everything you need is available at any time.

Manhattan supports almost any schedule. You can grab dinner at 2 a.m., drop off laundry overnight, or eat breakfast at lunchtime. Brooklyn has its own late-night spots, but many of its neighborhoods run on a more family-oriented rhythm built around school days and regular business hours.

3. You are closer to Central Park.

Manhattan can be hectic, but Central Park is one of the world's great urban escapes, and it is never far away. You are also close to world-class museums, Broadway, and many of the city's best-known landmarks, so your cultural options are close to endless.

4. It may provide more career opportunities.

Manhattan is still the center of the city's job market. From most of Brooklyn the commute is manageable, but in Manhattan you might live a few blocks from the office. Your apartment will likely be smaller and pricier, yet the time and money saved on commuting can offset part of that cost.

List of the Cons of Living in Manhattan

The island has real downsides too, and most of them come back to cost and space.

1. The cost of living is much higher in Manhattan.

For many people, cost is the deciding factor. Groceries, dining, utilities, and especially housing all cost more. Manhattan real estate typically sells for well above Brooklyn prices per square foot, and average rents run hundreds of dollars a month higher for comparable apartments. Run your budget carefully before you sign a lease.

2. It is less of a family-friendly environment.

Manhattan's pace is exciting, and it is also more crowded than most newcomers expect. Raising kids there is entirely possible but can be harder than in Brooklyn neighborhoods such as Greenpoint or Flatbush, where you are more likely to find extra space, parks, and family-oriented amenities nearby.

3. Owning a vehicle is virtually impossible.

In Manhattan, you get around on foot, by subway, or by cab. You can keep a car, but a garage spot often costs several hundred dollars a month on top of your car payment and insurance. Street parking is cheaper but comes with alternate-side rules and a higher risk of dings and break-ins.

4. You lose the brownstones when moving to Manhattan.

Brooklyn is famous for tree-lined streets, brownstones, and early 20th-century townhouses. Manhattan has its own beautiful buildings, but you are more likely to end up in a walk-up, a doorman building, or a loft. Downtown areas like the Financial District offer towers with dramatic views and luxury amenities, a very different feel from a Brooklyn stoop.
