Should I Tip My Long-Distance Movers?

A long-distance move is a big investment, so the tipping question feels bigger too. Here is how to decide whether to tip, how much, and how to split it.

Long-distance moves are not cheap, especially when you are heading from New York to the West Coast or relocating across several states. As a typical range, many interstate jobs land at several thousand dollars or more.

So when a crew of three spends long days packing, loading and unloading your home, do you tip each person? Pool it for the group? And is a tip expected at all, whether the move is across the borough or across the country? Let's sort it out.

How Much Should I Tip Movers?

Across most service jobs, around 20% is considered a generous tip for good work.

For movers, that percentage is usually meant for the whole team, split evenly, not 20% for each person. Giving every mover 20% of the bill would certainly make their day, but it is well above the norm.

Here is how the math works on a $5,000 long-distance move. At 20%, the total tip would be $1,000, which comes to roughly $335 each for a three-person crew.

You do not have to hit an exact percentage. If that number stretches your budget, 15% is still a solid tip: $750 in total, or about $250 per mover on a three-person team.

It often makes sense to tip each mover individually, based on their attitude, effort and professionalism. If you hand one lump sum to the crew lead, there is no guarantee it gets split the way you intended. When in doubt, ask your move coordinator how tips are usually handled.

Two Ways to Calculate a Tip

MethodHow it worksExample
Percentage of the move15% to 20% of the total bill, split among the crew$5,000 move: $750 to $1,000 total, about $250 to $335 each for 3 movers
Hourly per moverAbout $3 to $5 per mover per hour, up to $7 for excellent service4-hour job, 3 movers: about $60 standard, about $85 exceptional

Typical ranges only. Tipping is always optional and should reflect the service you received.

The hourly method is handy if you prefer not to think in percentages, and it scales naturally with how long the crew actually worked for you. For multi-day jobs with our long-distance movers, many customers tip separately at loading and at delivery, since the crews may be different.

Is It Mandatory to Tip My Movers?

Tipping is customary, but it is never required. Before you hand anything over, glance at your contract and final bill.

Some agreements already include gratuity. If you see a gratuity line on the invoice, you have already tipped, and nothing more is expected for a move of any distance.

Good movers know that great tips follow great work. At MPs New York, our crews focus on the basics that make a move go well:

  • Behaving professionally from start to finish
  • Handling your belongings with care so they arrive safely
  • Working safely and efficiently at every step
  • Arriving on time so the job stays on the agreed schedule
  • Keeping the same effort through the end of the day

When It's Fair to Reduce or Skip a Tip

Accidents can happen on any move. If the company owns a mistake and makes it right, that alone is not a reason to skip a tip, and our moving insurance guide explains how coverage works. Still, it is reasonable to reduce or withhold gratuity if:

  • The crew arrived far outside the agreed window without notice
  • Items were damaged and no one told you
  • The crew behaved in a way that was rude or upsetting
  • The job ran much longer than estimated with no explanation
  • No one apologized for lateness, poor service or damage

A great team works hard without expecting a tip. A tip simply recognizes when people go above and beyond for you.

Are There Alternatives I Can Offer?

If cash is tight, most movers understand. There are still meaningful ways to say thanks.

Food goes a long way. On a long job, coffee and bagels in the morning and sandwiches at lunch are always welcome. Pizza is the default, so it is worth asking what the crew would actually like.

Keep everyone hydrated. Cold water is essential, and iced tea, lemonade or sports drinks are a nice touch on hot days.

Write a review. A positive review that names your movers can open doors for them, and it costs you nothing.

Any gesture that shows you noticed the effort behind a long-distance move is appreciated. If you are headed south, see our guide to moving from New York to Florida.
