What Are the Best Neighborhoods in Manhattan?
Manhattan is a patchwork of very different neighborhoods. Here are eight great places to live and what makes each one unique.

Manhattan is an amazing place to build a life and a career. If you are new to the city, it can also feel overwhelming at first.
It is just one of the five boroughs, yet when most people picture New York, they picture this narrow island. Up close, it is really a collection of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own pace, architecture, and personality. If you are hunting for an apartment, these are some of the best places to start.
Where Should I Move to in Manhattan?
Rents vary widely across the island, so treat any figures you see as rough guides and check current listings. Whichever neighborhood you choose, our Manhattan movers know the building rules, freight elevators, and parking challenges.
1. Upper East Side
Stretching along the east side of Central Park, the Upper East Side offers a surprising range of housing, from genuinely affordable walk-ups on the far east avenues to some of the most expensive addresses in the world. Museum Mile is on your doorstep, daily errands are easy, and the Second Avenue and Lexington Avenue lines make getting around simple.
2. Upper West Side
On the other side of the park, the Upper West Side pairs sweeping views with plenty of old-New York charm and handsome pre-war buildings. With Riverside Park on one edge and Central Park on the other, it is a favorite with families. Several north-south subway lines make it one of the easiest neighborhoods to commute from.
3. Washington Heights
At the northern end of the island, between the Hudson and Harlem rivers, Washington Heights has a more relaxed feel and noticeably more space for the money. You get hilltop parks, historic sites, and some of Manhattan's lowest rents.
The trade-off is a longer ride if you work downtown. The A train runs express through the neighborhood and the 1 train serves its western side, though some commutes require a transfer. One-bedrooms here often rent for far less than the Manhattan average.
4. Midtown
Midtown, just south of Central Park, is the heart of office life in New York. That means busy days and surprisingly calm evenings once commuters head home. You will live among icons like the Empire State Building and Grand Central Terminal, with almost every subway line within walking distance. Rents are high, but you may find more options here than in trendier downtown neighborhoods.
5. Chelsea
Chelsea is Manhattan's gallery district, and it is at its best on a sunny day off. Blocks are dotted with galleries and public art, the High Line runs overhead, and Chelsea Market is an easy stop for breakfast or groceries. It is also well connected to the Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue lines. All of that makes it one of the pricier neighborhoods on this list.
6. Greenwich Village
Greenwich Village is the New York you have seen in movies and on TV. Washington Square Park is its centerpiece, and with NYU right there, the neighborhood is full of students, faculty, cafes, and music venues. Transit connections run in every direction, and there is a real sense of community among the brownstones and side streets.
7. East Village
The East Village is where much of New York's punk and counterculture history was written. It still draws students and creative types, and it has one of the densest concentrations of bars and restaurants anywhere in the city. Book lovers are a short walk from one of the city's most famous used bookstores near Union Square, and the subway gets you around quickly.
8. West Village
If you want a quieter pace with excellent subway access, the West Village is hard to top. Its streets predate the Manhattan grid, so they wind and angle in ways that make getting a little lost part of the fun. It is a fantastic place to people-watch, and living here gives you a true taste of classic New York life.
